The Literacy Council of South Temiskaming

Our Staff

Our staff is very involved in the regional and provincial literacy scene.  Our Executive Director, Susan Hughes, is a board member of the Community Literacy of Ontario network and our Program Assistant, Sharren Reil, sits on the Literacy Network Northeast board.  We have re-established our bi-monthly newsletter this year and have received positive feedback on it.

We have also forged strong links with our partners at other governmental agencies within our community.  By working together, we are able to reassess and update our programs to meet the learner’s needs in today’s marketplace.

Our Board is elected by our general membership at our Annual General Meeting, held in the fall of each year. All members of the Literacy Council (past and present learners and volunteers) are eligible to nominate and vote for Directors.

We are offering a free ongoing computer based course called Essential Skills for Employment. The student works at their own pace through a series of seven workbooks that examines today’s trends in various occupations and teaches students what requirements and skills are needed for them to be a successful job seeker. All students will create a cover letter and resume which they will use to apply for jobs. An instructor is onsite to assist the students with the books and the resume.

The class runs each Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00-12:00. Call 705 672-4232 to register.
